Even here, you half suspect the storytelling is still tongue-in-cheek. Democracy is at risk and speeches are made about the threat to the American way of life. In its final reel, the film suddenly becomes more earnest. Strangely, given the film’s wisecracking approach, comedian Chris Rock (playing one of Harold and Burt’s old comrades) gets very little screen time. In one memorable scene, a character is pushed into the path of an oncoming vehicle and squashed and dismembered in very satisfactory fashion. The film is full of eccentric and entertaining character performances, but Russell is so busy providing funny shtick for his all-star cast that the tension quickly seeps out of the story. His main characters are war veterans still carrying physical and mental scars. Wallace lives with his father, mother, and little brother, Sterling. It is about a curious boy named Wallace, his best friend Spud, and the new girl in town, Amelia, going on adventures in Snug Harbor. The writer-director is drawing on the fascinating real-life story of how, in 1933, right-wing, fascist-leaning American businessmen plotted a coup against President Roosevelt. Wallace the Brave is a humorous comic by Will Henry. It is hard to tell whether David O Russell ( American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook) is being brave or foolhardy with Amsterdam.
